The belief that jazz is a unique and powerful form of musical expression
requires that we identify and train the next generation of great jazz
musicians. Built on a constantly evolving tradition, jazz is a living art,
an art form that should be nurtured and supported for the benefit of
future generations.

It is the hope of many of the programs funded that students will respond
creatively to elements of music and apply what they learn to writing and
other projects, also to encourage students' creative self-expression and their
desire to take a productive role in society. A variety of in-school and after-
school instrumental training programs in the LAUSD as well as college level
training with America's jazz masters are examples of jazz studies programs
the Foundation supports.
